March Musings from Micah

I was at a loss about what to write this month, then Micah bailed me out by writing the following answers during his Spelling to Communicate (S2C) session with his practitioner, Beth Frede yesterday.  To give his words some context, the question that Beth asked initially was if Micah would like to give input to the website that was recently developed by Spellers and their families in New Hampshire.  (website address below) *

Micah said he would like to give input; thus, he and Beth had the following discussion:

Question: how has spelling changed your life?

SEEING MY MOM’S FACE THE FIRST TIME I SPELLED SOMETHING WAS TOTALLY REVOLUTIONARY.

Question:  What was life like before spelling?

YOU NEVER KNEW WHAT WAS TO HAPPEN ON ANY GIVEN DAY. THAT WAS REALLY SCARY NOT BEING ABLE TO SAY HOW I WAS FEELING OR GIVE ANY INPUT.  SINCE ACQUIRING COMMUNICATION, I CAN TELL MY MOM MY HEAD HURTS OR I’M WORRIED ABOUT SOMETHING OR MAKE FUN OF HER COOKING. (Mom’s note….the little brat)!

Question:  What message would you share with parents of non-minimal or unreliable speakers regarding communication?

LIFE IS SO MUCH SWEETER WITH DELIBERATE COMMUNICATION.  YESTERDAY WAS TOUGH, THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT. YOU NEED TO TRY S2C!

There is no need for me to say more.  It is a joy to hear from him and know he can advocate to help others like himself now.

Blessings,

Jan Lessard Peightell and Micah J. Lessard

Life Encounters of a
Family Navigating Autism

Navigating autism is not a straight path, nor is there a ‘road map’. It’s a winding road of trials, advocacy, discovery, and resilience. Families become translators of their child’s needs, architects of safe spaces, and champions of inclusion. Along the way, they encounter people who listen, neighbors who care, and communities that step up to help meet very real needs.
